The CANA National Tournament was held at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) in Oshawa Ontario on May 15-18th 2009 . This was the 35th Canadian National Netball Championships. British Columbia sent three Netball teams, Women's Open, Women's Under 23 and Men's Open. A total of twelve teams competed at the tournament. It was an action packed weekend of Netball!
The tournament was sponsored by Western Union Financial Services, and we really appreciate their support. All British Columbia Netball Teams were well dressed by KUKRI. Everyone looked fantastic in the new tracksuites and uniforms. British Columbia Netball is honoured to wear KUKRI www.kukrisports. com/ca-kukri-home .
It was a fun filled weekend for all participants, players, coaches, managers, umpires and fans. Everyone was thrilled to have two of the best Netball umpires in the world at the tournament, International Umpire Sylvester (Chris) Cambell and International Umpire Dalton Hinds. Both gentlemen have created history by being the first males to officiate in the 2007 World Netball Championship final, between New Zealand and Australia !
The much anticipated results of the exciting finals resulted in gold for:
Ontario Women's Open
British Columbia Men's Open
British Columbia Women's U23
Alberta U18.
The British Columbia Women's Open Team captured Silver in the tournament. It was a successful weekend for British Columbia and the many hours of training showed. Congratulations to all parcticpants. BCNA is l ooking forward to next year's tournament to be held in British Columbia in 2010.
The fun was not over for BC Netball teams. On June 12th - 14th, they competed in the USA 2009 National Netball Championship held in Seattle , Washington. This was a new and exciting adventure for BC as it was the first time BC participated in this tournament. Being so close to home, it was the perfect opportunity to compete and play against new athletes. As anticipated, there was a fantastic mix of Netball styles from the USA teams that represent a Caribbean style of play from the eastern side of the USA and from the west, an Australian style of play. BC bought home FOUR golds and ONE silver! Congratulations and well done to all players, with special thanks to coaches, managers, and volunteer umpires who travelled with the team to the tournament.
